Polar bear swims for 9 days, loses 22 percent of body mass and most likely her cub

Earlier this week, it was reported that a polar bear swam in open water in Alaska’s Beaufort Sea (where Shell wants to drill this summer!) for nine days in order to reach pack ice. She covered 687km/427 miles, lost 22 percent of her body mass and likely her yearling cub.

It’s a sobering view not only of what is to come, but what is already taking place in the arctic due to climate change.
