Koch & Exxon climate denial scientist confronted by Greenpeace Students (VIDEO)

Rarely do we meet those who have made careers selling us lies. Consider the oddball doctors who took tobacco money to deny a link between cigarette smoking and cancer, or the handful of scientists who take oil and coal money to discredit global warming science, or the people who have done both.

Willie Soon in a heated moment. Madison, WI (click to watch)

Last week, students in Wisconsin and Michigan stepped up to such an opportunity when CFACT Campus, the student arm of a well-known cabal of fossil fuel apologists, hosted climate change denier Willie Soon at several campus events around the country. Continue reading

September 2012 Photo of the Month

September Photo of the Month

A polar bear and her cub walk across melting ice floes above the Arctic Circle north of Russia on Sept. 11, 2012, as sea ice continued to melt below the previous record set in 2007. On September 16, scientists determined that the sea ice had reached the minimum for the year, a loss of at least 45 percent since records began. This new record is not likely to stand long.

Polar Bears pass near the Arctic Sunrise

Daniel Beltrá captured the September 2012 Photo of the Month with the Greenpeace Ship Arctic Sunrise beyond the bears. The combination of the iconic endangered species facing extinction as its habitat melts away and the ship’s scientific mission at the sea ice edge to witness and measure the climate extreme is amazing.

Talk about polarizing

Polar bear on Arctic sea ice seen from a Greenpeace ship

On the newest Greenpeace Radio show, Greenpeace writer Tom Avila talks with Dr. Steven C. Amstrup, senior scientist with Polar Bears International. Dr. Amstrup, who was selected as the 2012 recipient of the Indianapolis Prize for animal conservation, is a world-renowned polar bear biologist whose work contribute to the listing of polar bears as an endangered species.

Listen now

On the program, the two discuss the current state of the polar bear population, the surprisingly complex nature of sea ice and whether polar bears are the proverbial “canary in the coal mine” when we discuss climate change.

And don’t just listen! Subscribe, post commentsand take action for a green and peaceful future.

Drawing a Line in the Arctic Ice

by Ben AyliffeRIO+20 Arctic Rising

On Thursday at the Rio Earth Summit, Greenpeace joined forces with a host of famous names to demand that the uninhabited area of the High Arctic that lies around the North Pole be legally protected and kept off-limits to the companies and governments that are desperate to see it exploited.

But why should we bother?

Because what happens in the Arctic affects us all. Besides acting as a planetary air-conditioner, the region is a bellwether for the health of our climate and the global ecosystem.

The Arctic is warming faster than any other place on Earth. Ice is disappearing at unprecedented levels and with it the habitat of species like the polar bear, while the way of life of the four million people who live above the Arctic Circle is changing forever. Continue reading

23 years later and Shell has learned nothing from the Exxon Valdez disaster

Exxon Valdez Oil SpillTwenty-three years ago the Exxon Valdez ran aground at Bligh Reef in Alaska’s Prince William Sound.

The tanker spilled eleven million gallons of oil into the water, fouled 1,500 miles of Alaska’s coast and killed hundreds of thousands of seabirds, otters, seals and whales, and devastated local communities.

Despite Exxon’s declaration two years later that the spill was “cleaned up,” tens of thousands of gallons of crude oil still contaminate beaches and impact wildlife.

People in Alaska are still living with the very real impacts of the spill more than two decades later. The oil from the broken tanker stopped spilling after a few days, but the impacts to wildlife and communities still continue. There is no end date in sight for recovery. Continue reading

Save the Arctic

Stop ShellRight this minute a global fleet of Arctic destroyers is speeding towards one of the last unspoiled places on earth.

The ships are part of oil giant Shell’s mission to drill the very first wells in the pristine waters off the coast of Alaska. It’s insane, but melting sea ice from global warming has made it a reality. If Shell finds oil, the Arctic oil rush will be on.

It’s not over yet though. People are pushing back. In New Zealand, Greenpeace activists (including Xena Warrior Princess star Lucy Lawless) occupied a drill ship and prevented it from leaving for the Arctic for several days. And just last week activists occupied two icebreakers in Finland.

But to stop Shell for good, we eventually need the public support of millions around the world. Ben, that means you.

Join the 250,000 people from around the world who have already taken action and demand Shell stop its plans to put the fragile Arctic at risk.

Slideshow: Polar Bears on Parade

By Jamie, Greenpeace UK

There never really needs to be an excuse to look at incredible images of polar bears in the wild, but today has been designated International Polar Bear Day by conservation group Polar Bear International. So to mark the occasion, here’s a selection of shots from the Greenpeace archives. Continue reading

Polar Bears: Devious or in Danger?

Polar bears are so deceptive. All along they have been the ones behind global warming and concocting radical schemes to get themselves on the endangered list. They have been polluting Alaskan waters and destroying their own habitats for decades just to prove a point. They want the fame and the fortune that goes hand in hand with being endangered. Polar bears are out to ruin Alaska’s economy, how conniving of them.

Wait, what’s wrong with this picture?

About a fifth of the world’s diminishing polar bear population resides in Alaska. Recently, polar bears have been added to the endangered species list. How outrageous! Those polar bears should be ashamed of themselves! Of course, Alaskan law makers must remedy the bear’s meddling antics by spending millions of dollars to try and have the decision reversed. Those darn bears are purposely ruining their economy!

Polar bears are one of the largest bears on earth whose only predator is man. Global warming and oil spills are the largest threats currently effecting polar bears. Global warming diminishes habitats and when oil sticks to their fur, they cannot regulate their body temperature and if they ingest it while grooming it causes death. Hmm, isn’t Alaska’s main source of state revenue supplied by the oil industry? So, by protecting the polar bears and their natural habitat, it could effect the pipelines? Well, we simply cannot have that. The bears must go!

Or…Alaska’s economy could maintain their fishing and mining economy, which held them for so many centuries. But, why settle when you can kill off a majestic arctic animal that cannot help where it lives or how it is effected? Alaskan lawmakers are trying to put together a campaign to get the bears off the endangered list and into their graves. If polar bears aren’t protected now, what will happen? Despite what these politicians say, the animals are decreasing; their population is not stable. Polar bears cannot just pack up their suitcases and head off to the Caribbean for a nice vacation when things get tough up in the Arctic.

Alaskan legislatures are getting antsy. For years environmentalists have petitioned for more Alaskan animals to be listed and for offshore petroleum exploration be stopped. And now that they have finally gotten their way, lawmakers are not happy (to put it nicely). “The application for this listing is based on the unfounded, unproven scientific hypothesis that climate change is caused by human activity, in the form of increased release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere,” said Harris, who was House speaker. Global warming is simply a glitch? It’s not actually happening? Wake up Alaska, global warming is real, and it’s headed strait for the arctic.

Polar bears did not do this to themselves, nor were they scheming to ruin Alaska’s economy. They are just one of the thousands of helpless species subjected to pollution and global warming. They finally caught a break, so please don’t ruin it for them.
